Dear Friend of the Texas Heart Institute,
It is almost Mother's Day, a very good time to send heart-healthy wishes to all moms out there. Even better, you can provide the mothers in your life with some much-needed awareness and simple prevention strategies from THI's Center for Women's Heart & Vascular Health.
Send Mom an e-card to show your love and help her learn how to improve her heart health. See "Mother's Day Call to Action."
You might also be interested in learning more about National Women's Health Week (May 13-19) and the health fairs THI is co-sponsoring with Neighborhood Centers, Inc. to help address women's heart health needs all around the community. See the article and view the slideshow on our website.
Finally, I call your attention to two brief items.
- Our Houston MRI Screening Study project continues. With the help of the Kinder Foundation, we will screen 10,000 Houston-area middle school students for heart conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death. Under the leadership of the Center for Coronary Artery Anomalies, we are almost a third of the way through the study and the program got some recent attention in the New York Times.
- An innovative collaboration between Rice University students and THI's Dr. Mehdi Razavi has yielded an interesting device that has the potential to help some obese surgical patients breathe more easily. The device uses suction cups to literally lift a patient's abdomen, and the story of why and how the prototype came to be is an interesting one. Follow it in the THI Newsroom.
Of course, all these things are made possible by your continued support. Thank you and have a very happy, healthy Mother's Day.
With great respect,
James T. Willerson, MD
