Question:

Is a third open heart surgery possible for my father-in-law?

My father-in-law had a valve replacement and bypass surgery in 2003 and then in 2006, he got 2 stents in his coronary arteries.  Then a second operation was a triple bypass in 2011, and now his valve which was replaced is disintegrating. Is a third bypass surgery possible?

Answer:

by Texas Heart Institute cardiovascular surgeon, Denton A. Cooley, MD

Denton A. Cooley, MD, FACS, FACC, FCCPYes, the operation is possible but would be technically difficult due to adhesions. If may be necessary, however, if the valve has deteriorated.
