Question:
How long should I keep the IVC filter inserted?
I was diagnosed with two pulmonary embolisms last year. I have been on blood thinners for 7 months and had an IVC filter inserted. How long should I keep the IVC filter inserted?

Answer:
by Texas Heart Institute cardiovascular surgeon, J. Michael Duncan, MD
It is true that some of the more recent IVC filters are made such that they can be subsequently removed. It would be best for you to speak with the physician who placed the filter for you, and also your personal physician who knows your overall health. Collectively, you may all reach a satisfactory decision about any potential removal.
