Question:

Does summer heat affect leaking heart valves?

My mitral valve is leaking at moderate stage. If you get over heated in the summer time, does that affect your leaking valve?

submitted by Bill from Conroe, Texas on 7/22/2014

Answer:

by Texas Heart Institute cardiologist, George Younis, MD

George Younis, MDThere are no specific risks related to the summer heat with respect to moderate, or even severe, mitral regurgitation. Many patients are also able to continue to exercise normally, though individual cases should be discussed with a cardiologist.
