American Medical Writers Association to Present Top Honor to
Texas Heart Institute Editor Marianne Mallia
Houston, Texas (July 21, 2010) – The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) has announced that Marianne Mallia, ELS, Manager of Scientific Publications for the Texas Heart Institute (THI) at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital (SLEH), will be the recipient of its prestigious 2010 Swanberg Award.
The award, given to recognize an AMWA member for distinguished contributions to medical communication or the medical profession, will be presented to Mallia during AMWA's 70th Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, November 11-13, 2010.
AMWA, founded in 1940 and based in Rockville, Md., is the leading professional organization for writers, editors, and other communicators of medical information. The group boasts more than 5,600 members in the United States, Canada and 30 other countries.
Mallia, who has served in various capacities at THI for more than 35 years, manages a staff of writers and editors with more than 100 years of cumulative experience. They are responsible for contributing to numerous scientific publications and manuscripts and for Heart Watch, a physician newsletter.

"She exemplifies the THI commitment to fulfilling one of its key missions, educating physicians and other medical professionals about progress in combating cardiovascular disease."
Mallia began holding leadership roles in AMWA at both the chapter and national levels soon after she joined the association in 1979. As AMWA national president from 2002-2003, she proposed that AMWA establish a permanent endowment fund to ensure the financial future of the association. That idea became a reality in 2004. In addition, Mallia has taught workshops at the AMWA annual conference every year for 23 consecutive years, as well as numerous regional and chapter workshops. Her talent as a teacher was formally recognized by AMWA in 1998 when she received the Golden Apple Award.
"The breadth of Marianne's contributions to the medical communication profession is most impressive, including her own distinguished contributions to the medical literature, education of other medical writers, advocacy for professionalism, and mentorship of current and future leaders in the field," said AMWA in announcing the award.
