Dr. George J. Reul receives 2012 Ray C. Fish Award
Cardiovascular surgeon honored by Texas Heart Institute for scientific achievements, contributions to cardiology

Houston, Texas (December 10, 2012) – Dr. George J.
Reul has received the 2012 Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement,
presented annually by the Texas Heart Institute (THI) at St. Luke's Episcopal
Hospital (SLEH).
Presented
by famed heart surgeon and THI founder Denton A. Cooley, MD, and by THI
President James T. Willerson, MD, during the 12th annual Texas
Update in Cardiovascular Advancements Symposium, the award recognizes those
whose innovations have made significant contributions to cardiovascular
medicine and surgery.
Dr. Reul
is associate chief of surgery for THI, and director of SLEH's Peripheral
Vascular Laboratory. He also serves as a clinical professor at The University
of Texas Medical School in Houston and the Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Reul
was recognized for his long and meritorious career as both a surgeon and a
medical educator.
He
"enhanced the lives of countless patients from around the globe, both children
and adults," said the committee who nominated him for the award. "Simultaneously,
he markedly influenced budding careers of hundreds of young cardiac and vascular surgeons, also from all parts of the
world."
The
nomination also noted his instrumental role in establishing and winning
accreditation for the SLEH Peripheral Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory, where he
serves as medical director.
Dr. Reul served in the U.S. Army as Captain, first at the
93rd and 24th Evacuation Hospitals, Vietnam, from 1966 to 1967, and then at the
Edgewood Arsenal doing Wound Ballistics Research from 1967 to 1968.
The late Ray C. Fish, Houston philanthropist, established
the Ray C. Fish Foundation from which his generous gift to THI supported the
Institute's ability to serve a growing number of heart patients who were coming
to the Institute in the 1960s. In honor of Ray Fish's pivotal role in THI's
history, the Institute established the Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific
Achievement in 1972. Since that time 23 physicians have received the
prestigious award for their unique cardiovascular innovations.
The 12th Texas Update in Cardiovascular Advancements symposium was conducted on Dec. 7.
The annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) event is designed to update
medical professionals and researchers on the status and future directions of
cardiovascular research and medicine..
