Dr. Todd K. Rosengart named professor and research scientist at Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital 

Houston, Texas (December 11, 2012) – Dr. Todd K. Rosengart, professor and DeBakey-Bard Chair of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, has been appointed professor of heart and vascular disease as well as research scientist at the Texas Heart Institute (THI) at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.

Rosengart is a nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon who is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery with special expertise in minimally invasive sugery.

“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Rosengart to THI,” said Dr. James T. Willerson, THI president and medical director. “He will be a real asset to our students and a valuable research partner.”

Rosengart, an NIH-funded researcher, is considered a pioneer in gene therapy. He has worked since the early 1990s on gene transfer therapy and delivery and minimally invasive gene therapy delivery as well as cardiac stem cell transplantation. He has published extensively on these and related topics.

Rosengart joins THI from Stony Brook University. There he served as professor and chair of the department of surgery, chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery and co-director of the Stony Brook University Heart Center. He also served as president of Stony Brook Surgery Associates and board officer of the Stony Brook Clinical Practice Management Plan.

He earned both his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Northwestern University Honors Medical Program and completed his general surgery residency at New York University Medical Center. He was also a medical fellow at the National Institutes of Health. He held faculty positions at Northwestern University where he was the inaugural Owen L. Coon Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare and at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Outside of his faculty and research positions, Rosengart has held positions with a number of national associations, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and the 21st Century Cardiac Surgical Society. He has also served on the editorial boards of several surgery related publications and is currently editor of Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.”
