Innovation for all ages, even 101, at Texas Heart Institute
EVAR and TVAR at "101 years young"

At 101 has EVAR and TVAR procedures at Texas Heart InstituteHouston, TX (May 31, 2016) – Samuel Henderson lives in Louisiana, and enjoys spending time working on his ranch. At “101 years young,” there seems to be little that slows Mr. Henderson down.

In July 2015, Mr. Henderson fell from a tractor, which led to the discovery that he had severe aortic valve stenosis. When he was having imaging work done to determine the best approach to address this condition, a second cardiovascular issue was discovered. Mr. Henderson also had an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Caring for each of these conditions would require two separate procedures – an EVAR to fix the abdominal aortic aneurysm and a TAVR procedure to replace the aortic valve. These procedures are rarely done within a condensed period of time, in particular at Mr. Henderson’s age. However, due to the innovative approach Dr. Zvonimir Krajcer and Dr. Abdelkader Almanfi took, they were able to fix both of Mr. Henderson’s serious conditions within a few short weeks.

Both procedures were performed under a minimally invasive approach with sedation rather than general anesthesia, and Mr. Henderson has had a rapid recovery with no complications.

In a follow-up visit after his procedures, Mr. Henderson was feeling good and returned to his productive life working on his ranch. He is getting ready to celebrate his 102th birthday soon.
