Since 1955 more than 1,000 anesthesiologists have received a portion of their training in the THI program of anesthesia for cardiovascular surgery. The Department of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology offers the following training opportunities:
CV Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training
The Department of Anesthesiology now offers 2 one-year ACGME-accredited (CA-5 level) clinical fellowship opportunities. Positions are available in both fellowships for graduates of accredited training programs.
The Cardiovascular Anesthesia fellowship offers further advanced training in anesthesia for cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. Emphasis is placed on anesthetic management of adult patients for the entire spectrum of cardiovascular and transplant surgical care. training in transesophageal echocardiogarph, supervision of cardiopulmonary bypass, consultation on non-surgical cardiac patients, coagulation management, and postoperative intensive care are important elements of this fellowship training.
The Critical Care Medicine fellowship offers further advanced training in perioperative critical care medicine. The core program is centered in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) and the medical intensive care unit (MICU). Emphasis in this fellowship is placed primarily on the anesthetic management of critically ill patients before and after cardiothoracic surgery, specifically instruction in the principals of cardiopulmonary physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology related to elective or emergency care of patients. Training in the CV recovery room (CVRR) will include invasive and noninvasive monitoring techniques, respiratory care, mechanical ventilator management, hepatic and renal failure, coagulopathy, sepsis syndrome, multisystem organ failure as well as neurologic and cardiac diseases.
Candidates interested in acquiring training in both specialties may apply for dual training, resulting in a 2 year fellowship.
