Texas Heart Institute Library and Learning Resource Center offers the following services to eligible users.
Services
- Collection (books, journals, audiovisual material)
We maintain the most current and up-to-date collections possible. The scope and breadth of our collection reflects not only the history of cardiovascular disease, but also the best of academic scholarship and cutting-edge trends in the study of cardiovascular disease. Textbooks are arranged by subject in accordance with the National Library of Medicine's classification system. The Texas Heart Institute Library receives approximately 100 current journal titles, which are arranged alphabetically. A selection of the most recent issues received is displayed outside the library stack area. The audiovisual collection is arranged by media type and classified by subject using the National Library of Medicine's classification system.
- Classes
Classes about information retrieval and management are offered by L&LRC staff. We currently offer PubMed classes, Accessing Electronic Resources, PowerPoint, EndNote, Excel, Library Essentials, Impressive Presentations, Scopus, Searching - Google Scholar, and Rapid Research Alerts. Classes are scheduled two months in advance and students can register online. Course content and schedules can also be customized. For more information, contact Sonya Fogg at sfogg@texasheart.org.
- Fee-based Interlibrary Loan
Photocopies of articles from volumes not held at the Texas Heart Institute Library may be obtained through interlibrary loan. There is a charge for this service, and delivery time varies between 2 and 8 days. Rush requests require an additional fee and are generally available within 24 hours. For more information, contact a library staff member.
- Mediated Literature Search Service
The Library's search professionals can perform mediated literature searches for patrons. A variety of databases are used, including MEDLINE, Cinahl, EBM Reviews, Current Contents, Reference Update, and Up-to-Date. Many of these resources are accessible through our affiliation with the Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center Library. Current awareness services, also known as SDIs (Selective Dissemination of Information), are available to clinicians and researchers who need a weekly or monthly update of the journal literature about any topic or field of interest. A search professional will work with you to formulate a comprehensive search strategy. We strongly recommend a research interview when making your search requests. Requests are usually filled within two business days. Complete and submit the literature search request form, or contact Sonya Fogg at sfogg@texasheart.org.
- Public Access Workstations
Computer systems that support reference and academic tasks are available. These systems are connected through a high-speed Internet link to specific reference sites, including many that provide access to online journals. Interactive educational and reference materials, document editing and production software, and imaging hardware are also available. For more information, contact Sonya Fogg at sfogg@texasheart.org.
- Reference
A reference librarian is available to answer questions and provide assistance regarding collections, services, and information sources available at the Texas Heart Institute.
Reference services are available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments are recommended for individuals seeking in-depth assistance. Contact a library staff member.
