New Books from THI Authors

Two new books have just come out from Dr. Willerson and his colleagues at Texas Heart Institute and from around the world.

Stem Cell and Gene Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease, edited by Emerson C. Perin, Leslie W. Miller, Doris A. Taylor, and James T. Willerson “offers today’s most up-to-date, user-friendly guidance on the evaluation, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of this most important aspect of cardiovascular disease.”

Coronary Artery Disease
, edited by James T. Willerson and David R. Holmes, Jr. “is a state-of-the-art reference that combines, in one place, the breadth and depth of information available on the topic.”

Copies of both are on display in the Library & LRC. Stop by C520 to see the hard work of your colleagues in print!

A Day in the Life of Your Friendly Librarian

For National Medical Librarians Month we decided to give you a taste of what it’s like to be a medical librarian here at THI. I start every morning with a nice strong cup of coffee. First order of business is to check my email, then I scan the news for three clients who subscribe to our personalized news service. Around mid-morning the phone rings, it’s one of our researchers asking about Microsoft Word. “Argh!” she says “I can’t make this template work!” I calm her down and help her out. I make sure to get her signed up for our Microsoft Word class before we hang up. After checking the mail and picking up the newspaper, I check my email again. I have a new request for 5 articles, so I look them up in PubMed and email the full text articles.

After a delicious lunch of homemade soup (made by my husband the professional chef, yes I know I’m spoiled), I head out for my daily walk around the building. On rainy or exceptionally hot days I head for the SkyBridge. Sometimes making a stop at Starbucks for a little pick-me-up.

Back to work and straight into cataloging. I’m especially excited about the new books this week because one is by our very own THI authors! Including Dr. Willerson, Dr. Taylor, and Dr. Perin. I take a break to help one of our fellows with the photocopier. I show him how to scan a document to his USB stick.

I spend most of the afternoon working on a literature search request for one of our professional staff. I start my search in PubMed and move on to Scopus to see if there are more articles there. When I’m satisfied I have found what she is looking for I email her the results.

At the end of the day I feel satisfied that I helped out patrons find what they need and I head home with a smile on my face. It’s all in a day’s work here at the L&LRC.

Sonya and I are proud to be your Texas Heart Institute librarians. We have chocolates at the circulation desk in October! Looking forward to seeing you soon.

-Rebecca

We’ve Been Upgraded

The Learning Resource Center computer lab and training room computers have all been upgraded to Office 365. Some of the new features include easy screen shots, editing capabilities for PDF documents, a new spell checker with dictionary, and more support for images and videos.

We will debut updated classes on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint later this fall. If you want training before then, or an introduction to working with Office 365, just give us a call.
