The Texas Heart Institute® Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center was started in 1965 under the guidance of Dr. Robert Leachman. The fellowship has a rich history of stalwart clinician-educators, such as Dr. Leachman, Dr. Robert Hall, Dr. James T. Willerson, and many others, who take tremendous pride in training our fellows. Over the decades, the Texas Heart Institute (THI) cardiology fellowship program has made a name for itself by consistently training outstanding cardiologists who are highly regarded for their clinical skill throughout the cardiology community.
Program Director – Stephanie Coulter, MD, FACC, FASE
Dr. Stephanie Coulter is the Director of the Texas Heart Institute Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Associate Director of Non Invasive Cardiology at CHI Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and founding director of the Texas Heart Institute Center for Women’s Heart & Vascular Health Dr. Coulter earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. She completed internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed a fellowship in general cardiology with an advanced fellowship in echocardiography at Massachusetts General Hospital and a research fellowship in clinical epidemiology and also clinical trials at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital with the Thrombosis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Group. Dr. Coulter is registered as a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in cardiovascular disease echocardiography, and she is certified in nuclear medicine. Associate Program Director – George Younis, MD, FACC
Dr. George Younis was born and raised in Houston, TX. After completing undergraduate education at Brown University, he attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. He completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and served an additional year as Chief Resident. He then returned home to Houston for training in cardiology at Baylor/St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, where he subsequently trained an additional year for further specialization in Interventional Cardiology. Dr. George Younis is Board Certified in Cardiology (2005, 2015), and Interventional Cardiology (2006). He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology as well as the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. He currently serves as the associate program director of the cardiovascular disease fellowship program and has been recognized with the Robert J Hall Teaching award (2015) and the Interventional True Brotherhood Award (2014).
Associate Program Director and Interventional Cardiology Program Director – R. David Fish, MD, FACC
Dr. R. David Fish is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, and currently serves as the program director for the interventional program and the associate program director for the general cardiovascular disease fellowship. He received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas, and went on to complete his internal medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He continued his subspecialty training in cardiovascular disease at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Over his career, he has remained a leader in the field of coronary stenting, PFO and ASD closure, heart valve disease and percutaneous heart valve replacement.
Electrophysiology Program Director – Mohammad Saeed, MD, FACC
Focusing his practice on treatment and prevention of cardiovascular arrhythmias, Dr. Mohammad Saeed is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and Fellow American College of Cardiology. Dr. Saeed received his MD from the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He continued his subspecialty training in cardiovascular disease at the University of Wisconsin and Tufts New England Medical Center and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He specializes in implantation of pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, biventricular devices and ablation of complex cardiac arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation. He is also active in research in order to better understand and treat life threatening arrhythmias. Dr. Saeed's research work has been extensively published and presented both nationally and internationally.
Heart Failure Program Director – Andrew B. Civitello, MD, FACC Dr. Andrew B. Civitello, board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, has practiced cardiology in the Houston area for many years. A native Houstonian, Dr. Civitello began his pursuit of becoming a cardiologist when he received his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Next, he completed a residency program in Internal Medicine at UTHSC System hospitals such as Hermann and LBJ Hospital. Dr. Civitello continued his training with fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology at the world-renowned Texas Heart Institute. Dr. Civitello specializes in interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular procedures, with advanced training in heart failure management and heart transplantation, general and interventional cardiology, including cardiac catheterization, CT angiography, nuclear cardiology, and advanced training in peripheral artery interventions. Dr. Civatello serves as the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at the Texas Heart Institute at CHI St. Luke’s Health and is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine.
