Program Description
The Texas Heart Institute/Baylor College of Medicine Thoracic Surgery Residency Program is a three-year program that accepts four residents annually. The Program Director is Joseph S. Coselli, MD, Division Chief, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine and Chief, Adult Cardiac Surgery, Texas Heart Institute.
The program's core values are integrity, respect for the individual, continuous commitment to excellence, dedication to discovery/innovation, and fostering leadership through education and teaching. These values are expressed through a program providing comprehensive training in adult and pediatric thoracic and cardiac surgery in an environment that stresses clinical excellence, clinical and basic research, and teaching as long-term goals for graduates. To be eligible to apply, candidates must have successfully completed five years of an accredited General Surgery Residency Program and be eligible for examination by the American Board of Surgery.
The Texas Heart Institute/Baylor College of Medicine Thoracic Surgery Residency Program provides thorough training in all aspects of pre-operative and post-operative care to patients with pathological conditions within the chest. These include coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, diseases of the aorta and great vessels, heart failure, lung failure, lung cancer, emphysema, disorders of the trachea and airways, esophageal disease (benign and malignant), and disorders of the mediastinum. A large and growing program in congenital heart surgery at Texas Children's Hospital also provides thoracic residents significant experience treating congenital heart disease. Other clinical rotations include renowned institutions: M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Harris County Hospital District/Ben Taub General Hospital; Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Administration Hospital; and Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s.
The program emphasizes the central role of the residents in the management of thoracic surgical patients. It strives to impart core values as lifelong goals for the residents and seeks to help them become educators for life. In recognizing the relatively senior status and long clinical experience of the thoracic residents—and the highly competitive nature of the selection process for this program—residents are viewed as colleagues as well as students, and it is considered a privilege to work with them. Residents obtain a large and diverse clinical experience of decision-making and hands-on operative experience.
Application Information
Applicants for the program must have completed an approved residency in General Surgery and be eligible for the qualifying and certifying examinations of the American Board of Surgery by the time they are to enter the Program. They must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) at www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm and utilize the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) at www.nrmp.org/ (program number 1344460F0).
The following items are required:
- Completed ERAS application
- Personal statement
- Curriculum Vitae
- Three passport-sized pictures (OPTIONAL)
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty members
- USMLE Board Scores
- American Board of Surgery In-training (ABSITE) exams
- Medical school diploma in its original language, as well as in English (copied and notarized, stating that it is a true copy of the original)
- Medical school transcript in its original language, as well as in English (copied and notarized, stating that it is a true copy of the original)
- Dean's verification of pending or past graduation
- ECFMG certificate if a foreign medical graduate (copied and notarized). Please allow 4-6 weeks processing.
Completed applications must be submitted by February 1st.
International Graduates will need to contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for information regarding the process of paperwork for students and graduates of foreign medical schools. Texas Heart Institute/Baylor College of Medicine requires international medical graduates to meet the requirements for an Institutional Permit, as outlined by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the documents necessary for a J-1 Visa. If you have completed your general surgery residency on a J-1 Visa, you may require an extension of your visa which will require a letter of extraordinary need from your home country. Please make certain that you can obtain this letter by contacting the Ministry of Health in your country.
Application Review / Interviews
The Thoracic Surgery Residency Committee will review residency applications when complete. Applicants who are considered competitive for appointment in the residency program will be invited for a personal interview. The interview process is an important factor in the final selection of candidates for the program. This will provide the applicant an opportunity to visit the institution and meet with the thoracic surgery faculty and residents. It will also allow the thoracic surgery residents a chance to visit with the applicant and answer any additional questions.
The Texas Heart Institute/Baylor College of Medicine Thoracic Surgery Residency Program conducts two formal interview sessions each year. At the interview sessions, an introduction and slide presentation is given by the Program Director. Each applicant will be interviewed by multiple faculty members. The applicants also have an opportunity to visit with the current residents and tour with the residents as guides. Before adjourning, a luncheon will be served and the applicants will be able to ask questions.
The 2013 interview sessions are in February and March.
