THI Research Indicates New Blood Pressure Guidelines Greatly Impact Women in the Houston Area
Last week new guidelines were released that redefine hypertension (high blood pressure), which is a leading cause of heart failure, stroke and heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, the change means 46 percent of U.S. adults will now be identified as having high blood pressure. In the Houston area – which is home to the Texas Heart Institute – the percentage of women with hypertension could be even higher based on research conducted by the Institute’s Center for Women’s Heart & Vascular Health.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Ott, Surgeon-in-Chief at THI, has performed more than 20,000 heart and vascular procedures, earning a strong reputation for his technical expertise in the field of cardiovascular surgery. On Friday November 10, he attended the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Awards at University of Texas where he was honored for his professional achievements as one of the world’s most experienced heart surgeons.

THI Team Makes Discovery That Puts Heart Regeneration One Step Closer to RealityResearchers in Texas Heart Institute’s Cardiomyocyte Renewal Laboratory published study results in the high-impact journal Nature which unveil new insights in the functionality of the Hippo pathway – a genetic pathway related to heart regeneration that was previously discovered by the lab’s researchers. The study revealed a direct correlation between the dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) and the Hippo pathway, which inhibits cardiomyocyte proliferation, thereby restricting the heart’s ability to repair itself after injury.
